One of the most beautiful places in Morocco are the Roman ruins of Volubilis near Meknes between Fez and Rabat. One meaning of Volubilis is "Sculpture" perhaps because of the many sculptures that were present at this location. Another meaning of the name in Latin is "Morning Glory".
Volubilis developed as a Phoenician / Carthaginian settlement from the 3rd century BC. In the 2nd century this outpost of the Roman Empire was remote. Some of the most striking buildings are the basilica, temples and triumphal arch.
