first planned city in the United States

by General James Oglethorpe founded in 1733 and Savannah, the first planned city was to be in what would be the United States. Using a distinctive grid pattern, General Oglethorpe, a representative of King George II, drew plans for a city consisting of park-filled squares and circles by houses, shops and other buildings is limited. Built some of the first structures in Savannah and other in the 19th century remain today. You are in Savannah Historic District, a National Historic Landmark area.

Moon Pies® and RC Cola

The Thunderbird Inn ,. It is on the edge of the Savannah Historic District, bills itself as "the most popular hotels in Savannah." The estate is neither a guest house nor an hotel, a two story motel with exterior corridors. This motel was built in 1964, describes himself as having "smart southern retro decor." Upon arrival, guests receive fresh, hot popcorn. When entering their rooms there is a moon Pie® are on her pillow and cans RC Cola. The free continental breakfast consisting of KrispyKreme ® Donuts and a selection of fruit juices. There is a coffee / tea maker in each room.

oldest hotel in Downtown Savannah

The Marshall House, 1851 designed by entrepreneur Mary Marshall, is the oldest hotel in Savannah Historic District. Renovated at least five times, many original features remain from the property - brick walls, doors, fireplaces, windows, wooden floors, moldings, high ceilings and stairs. Some bathrooms have baths with antique claw foot. The hotel serves a complimentary wine and cheese in the library every Sunday through Thursday evening. Guestroom amenities include free Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access, high-definition LCD flat-screen television, CD player, coffee maker and mini-fridge.

45 Bistro

The 1852 built, 45 Bistro a fine dining establishment located next to the Marshall House. Open only for dinner, the restaurant, with exposed brick walls, showcases paintings by local artists.

Antique lovers will appreciate the interior of the Hamilton-Turner House. This allegedly haunted Victorian house features 17th and 18th century antiques in the rooms. Chippewa Square, named for the Battle of Chippewa in the War of 1812, is the location of the Forrest Gump "chocolate box" scene.
