The Craig Goch Dam is a dam in the Elan Valley of Wales and manages the top of the Elan Valley reservoirs. It is often called the Top Dam. Elan Valley is known a valley to the west of Rhayader, Powys, Wales, sometimes referred to as the "Welsh Lake District". Total area of the valley is 70 square miles (180 km2) of the lake and the countryside. Elan Valley is known for its picturesque scenery.
The Craig Goch Dam began to build in 1897 and it was completed in 1904. It is located at an altitude of 1040 feet (317m) above sea level. The main purpose of the dam and other reservoirs is to be supplied to Birmingham with water. A 480 kW hydropower plant put into operation at the dam in 1997.
